-- Legacy Gala 2020 About Ministry Partners Blog Our Team Give Resources Legacy Gala 2020 About Ministry Partners Blog Our Team Give Resources Scroll brings to a broken world the hope for lasting change, rooted in Episcopal vision, faith, and experience, and expressed through collective community efforts. Since 1960, has been a witness to social justice throughout northern Illinois. Gathering recources from faithful Episcopalians, parishes, and foundations, has poured more than $17,000,000 into a network of social service organizations to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. While supporting agencies that provide food, shelter, healthcare, spiritual care, and rehabilitative assistance to those affected by systems of oppression, is increasingly committed to invest in comunity-based efforts to examine and address the causes and conditions that give rise to such deep human need. is well-positioned to continue its longstanding work for justice in northern Illinois through its financial support of agencies, its commitment to the training of organizational leaders and its increasing commitment to community-based efforts that promote lasting change. Your generous donations make this work possible. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return… When I was a pastor, I spoke these words aloud as Ash Wednesday churchgoers made their way forward to the altar for ashes—a sign of their mortality and need of God. I always found it both jarring and appropriate to trace that same ashy cross on the foreheads of the withered and the fresh, of the elder and the infant. Lent sees us, “poor and needy” pilgrims and invites us to take our place among the newborn and the elder— to return to God by acknowledging that we cannot manage life by ourselves--we need God and we need others. By holding space for our own vulnerability, we can walk the Lenten journey in solidarity with the most vulnerable of our sisters and brothers. This year, our Lenten Reader offers resources to help connect the inner journey of personal spirituality with the opportunities that beckon us to social holiness and justice with our neighbors. In these pages, Lenten scriptures and prayers move us toward self-reflection upon our own need of God even as the photography of the work of two of our Ministry Partners reminds us of the vulnerability we share with those in deepest need. What’s more, these same resources pull us to the unexpected joy we may find in ourselves and in the faces of light photographed so beautifully in this Reader. ’ work and our support of our Ministry Partners is grounded in spirituality--in Episcopal faith, vision, and tradition. This Reader stands as a point of contact between our personal relationships with God and our relational commitments to our neighbors. Lent’s ashes remind us that we are all vulnerable children in need of God’s grace...and therefore, in need of each other.Blessings on your journey, Matt Berryman Executive Director, mberryman@eccsonline.net Lenten Reader Our Lenten Reader brings together the daily office readings from the Book of Common Prayer as well as collects, poetry and visual elements from local and regional theologians, scholars, and artists. This resource is available for free by e-mailing TBeltranDelRio@eccsonline.net A guest at Care for Friends Care For Friends Care for friends is a ministry partner of that gathers a community for regular meals that have no sign-in requirements or other “asks”. Clothes are distributed, games are played, resources are made available, doctors are consulted, and relationships are built. Wesley Taylor, a local Chicago photographer and influencer has been spending time at Care for Friends, and in the photo essay that follows he shares his glimpse into the community that has grown up around this vital space. “It was a privilege to see grace, joy and peace being shared so freely--no matter where along life’s journey folks found themselves. I appreciated the vital reminder that our call to holiness isn’t contingent on feelings, whims or a certain state of mind; but on the hope we have in Christ, which is often most visible through the tangible kindness of others.” - Wesley Tayor experience more A student at Lawrence Hall Lawrence Hall Through career readiness, development of social and emotional skills, and direct mentorship, the youth in Lawrence Hall’s Project Work Program are challenged to invest in their futures. Empowerment and self-confidence often lead to success. Participants learn the fundamentals of resume building, mock interviewing, community collaboration, and are provided the tools to thrive while remembering to celebrate their accomplishments. In this photo-essay, Grant Lewandowski takes us with him on a visit to the people and space of Lawrence Hall. Learn more Mason Pippenger Veiled Inspired by the traditional practice of covering icons and statuary during Lent, Mason Pippenger brings us a photo essay that explores this idea both as a “fast for the senses” and as treating the human body as a sacred object. As these photos are self-portraits, we are even invited to consider Mason’s body in the context of a sacred objetct. We can see in this work both the self-exploration and the self-denial that Lent represents. “For this series, I took inspiration from the tradition of covering crucifixes and other sacred things in churches during Lent. I wanted to represent the sacredness with oneself though and have people see Lent as a time of inward reflection. I tried to capture different moments and points-of-view with my photos (as an outside viewer, the act of covering the object, as the sacred object itself, etc). I think that spiritual and non-spiritual people can use Lent as a beneficial and useful time to locate the faults and potential of both ourselves and our religious organizations.” - Mason Pippenger Experience more The heart of our work Our Ministry Partners Building on a rich tradition of meeting the needs of our communities, commits to fund and support community-based leaders and initiatives that are creating lasting change by transforming despair to hope in, by, and through those same communities. Your presence and generosity are a huge encouragement to the work of and our ministry partners. We are grateful for those of you who could make it. It was a great joy to honor the philanthropic work of Quintin Primo III and to remember the legacy of his father, Bishop Quintin E Primo Jr, and Bishop James W Montgomery. For those of you interested in seeing the video about their work, we are including it below: How we do it Capacity Building ' Capacity Building Program equips a new generation of not-for-profit leaders with the perspectives, skills, strategies, and personal support needed to effectively guide their organizations and fulfill their mission in the midst of these challenging times. Through a wide-range of capacity building services offered by , our ministry partners, Episcopal congregations, and other faith-based not-for-profit organizations realize their full potential by providing the training opportunities, learning resources, consultation, and one-to-one support. “ Finally, I call upon those Christians, especially Episcopalians in our communities to become agents in the effort to help lead us from a climate of tension and bigotry toward unity and good will. ” — Bishop Quintin E Primo Jr Updates, Invitations and info Sign up with your email address to receive our monthly e-mails Email Address Sign Up We respect your privacy.
